Shapes everywhere

Liri floated past the skylight and suddenly stopped.

Liri: “Erklärus – your window is a rectangle! And the Moon behind it is a circle!”
Erklärus: “Now you see it too. Shapes are everywhere – you just have to look closely.”

🔵 The four basic shapes

There are four shapes that you can find almost everywhere:

⚪
Circle
round, no corners
e.g. the Moon
🔺
Triangle
3 corners, 3 sides
e.g. the tip of a rocket
🟨
Square
4 equal sides
e.g. a pane of glass
▭
Rectangle
4 corners, sides of different lengths
e.g. the blackboard

🎒 The feely bag – recognising shapes without looking

Erklärus reaches into a bag without looking inside and feels a shape.

Erklärus: “I can feel: three corners, three edges. What is it?”
Circle
Triangle
Square
Erklärus: “Another one: completely round, no corners at all. What is it?”
Circle
Rectangle
Square

🔁 Continuing patterns

Patterns repeat again and again in the same rhythm. What comes next?

🌌 Shapes in the universe

Seen from far away, the Earth is almost a perfect circle – a sphere.
The tip of many rockets is a triangle, so that they cut through the air better.
If you join bright stars in the sky with lines, constellations appear – whole patterns made of dots!

A new way of looking

Liri looked around the room once more. Everywhere that there had only been things before, she now saw shapes.

Liri: “I think I see the world differently now.”
Erklärus: “That is geometry. It doesn’t change the world – it changes how you look at it.”
Liri: “Now I recognise the shapes in my memories too – the ring of the giant planet was a circle, the tip of the rocket a triangle. I’ll draw them on my star map.”
“The four basic shapes: circle, triangle, square, rectangle. Patterns repeat in a rhythm – if you find the rhythm, you know what comes next.”

Chapter 5 mastered!

Erklärus and Liri now see the world with mathematical eyes – full of shapes and patterns.

Erklärus’s notebook – page 5:
“Four basic shapes: circle, triangle, square, rectangle. You recognise shapes by their corners and sides – even with your eyes closed. Continuing a pattern means: finding the rhythm.”
